Control Valve for the iPhone has been released.

Here is another indispensable tool for the working professional or engineering student.

There are four (4) calculators in this control valve sizing application.  You have the ability to calculate either the volumetric flow rate or the Cv of the valve for both liquid and gas service.  This allows you to crunch numbers quickly for preliminary sizing purposes.  As always, consult your vendor with the results obtained to ensure you have selected the correct valve, trim, etc.

For the liquid sizing tabs you will need to enter in the liquid flow rate, pressure drop across the valve and the specific gravity.  The application will calculate the valve Cv along with recommending the actual manufacturer’s Cv based on a ratio of 1.25 to 2 times the calculated Cv.  In order to determine the liquid flow rate just enter the Cv, specific gravity and the pressure drop across the valve.

For the gas sizing tabs you will need to enter in the gas flow rate, the molecular weight of the gas, the inlet and outlet pressures on the valve and the temperature.  The application will calculate the valve Cv along with recommending the actual manufacturer’s Cv based on a ratio of 1.25 to 2 times the calculated Cv.  In order to determine the liquid flow rate just enter the Cv in lieu of the flow rate, the molecular weight of the gas, the inlet and outlet pressures on the valve and the temperature.

Tank Drain for the iPhone has just been released.

This is a handy calculator that you can use in the field or office to determine the time it will take for a vertical cylindrical tank to drain from one level to another if a leak is developed.  Note that the default discharge coefficient used is for a square or sharp edged orifice.  Also, the time to drain the tank is based on water or fluids with a similar viscosity to that of water.

How to use this application?

All you have to do is enter the cylindrical tank I.D., the hole/nozzle I.D., the height of the leak’s centerline, the discharge coefficient, the initial tank level and the final tank level.  When you click the calculate button it will return the time to drain the tank in seconds, minutes and hours.  Note the units required are referenced in the application.

Please leave feedback regarding this application at our support site.  We will take this information into account for the future updates.

Pressure Drop Calc for the iPhone has just been released.

This is an indispensable tool for the working professional or engineering student.

All you have to do is enter the fluid flow rate, pipe inside diameter, fluid density, fluid viscosity, pipe roughness factor (not the relative roughness but the pipe material roughness) along with the equivalent length in either pump runs or a combination of piping plus valves and fittings.  When you click the calculate button it will return the Reynolds number, Fanning friction factor, pressure drop and fluid velocity in the pipe.  The Fanning friction factor is calculated using the Churchill equation which is valid for the laminar, transition and turbulent range.  The default roughness factor is for commercial steel.

Our second application, Cooling Tower Calc, has just been released in the iTunes app store.

This simple application allows you to calculate a cooling tower make-up rate, blow down rate, evaporation rate and drift rate. All you have to do is enter your recirculating water flow rate, temperature differential across the tower and the target cycles of concentration and the application does the rest.
